I'm on the autism spectrum but am always wary about how autistic people are depicted. Often, well meaning writers cast the autistic person as a childlike charity case, even in a romance. We don't stand as our own people with thoughts and ideas.Amanda Radley, however, has done a pretty good job. Scarlett reminds me of me when I was younger, before I was diagnosed and started really practicing my social skills. There's a sense of disconnect, like someone slapped a physics problem and told you to solve it with no guidance., and then they get angry when you can't do it. The anxious, confused feeling Scarlett gets about invisible rules (and their exceptions) and mysterious motives is 100% accurate. She actually has a personality, too, that isn't solely defined by autism.There's still flaws. This is very obviously a book written looking in on autism, from someone trying to understand it, and that is commendable as a way of getting people to understand it. But it's also frustrating, because that's most of the plot, and not much is devoted to Heather's (and Scarlett's) progression through that understanding. It's kind of like how for a very long time, the only time you had a gay character in a TV show was for a coming out story. Scarlett and Heather's romance is lovely, but it lacks the feeling of being rounded out.[Spoilers incoming]There's also the one scene near the end where Heather talks about Scarlett's autism to her father before Scarlett does. Imagine if instead, Scarlett hadn't come out to her dad about her sexuality, and then Heather told him. It's a person's own choice to reveal their mental disabilities, not someone else's, no matter how close they are or how well meaning. It was different when Heather discussed the possibility of Scarlett's autism with other people, in the same way she could have discussed whether Scarlett liked women before she knew.That being said, this was a pretty easy, charming romance. Heather is really cute in how dogged she is trying to figure out Scarlett, and Scarlett is both entirely right about the Post-It notes and grade-A hilarious. Give her a few years and I expect she'll have cultivated humor drier than the Sahara. Of course I love good writing and I love a good story, but when I can also learn something well, that's a perfect trifecta. This book is! I enjoyed every minute.I know the back story is necessary so you start on some kind of footing, but once that's out of the way I really like a story to move at a steady pace. This one does. It isn't long and drawn out, it moves along well. I also like the lack of convoluted angst. Just real obstacles that are overcome, and that's it. Love it. 5 stars in my reckoning.I strongly recommend it. Just in case someone doesn't like overdone sex scenes, there are none. Nicely placed innuendo and some sweet implications, that's it. The imagination paints the rest.
